SVA Cyprus guide

How Much Does an SVA Test Cost in Cyprus?

There is no dependable one-price answer for every imported vehicle. Learn what can affect your SVA cost and which Customs, MOT and registration charges are separate.

People importing a car understandably want a single price before it leaves the seller. In practice, a responsible quote starts with the vehicle, its origin and its documents. A Japanese-market car, a post-Brexit UK import and a left-hand-drive vehicle from another EU country do not necessarily follow identical approval or registration routes.

The Cyprus Road Transport Department describes Single Vehicle Approval as an individual approval process that checks the construction specifications of used vehicles imported from third countries. That is distinct from the other costs involved in buying, shipping, clearing and registering a vehicle.

Why there is no useful universal SVA price

The test route depends on facts such as the vehicle category, first-registration date, country of origin, steering position and type-approval evidence. Its condition and specification also matter. A complete, compliant vehicle with clear original documents may need a different amount of preparation from a modified vehicle or one with missing paperwork.

Before comparing quotes, check exactly what each one covers. A low headline price may refer only to one part of the process, while another quote may include practical support or pre-test document review.

Items that may affect the total

  • The SVA inspection or approval service: ask whether the quote is for the test alone or includes administration and document review.
  • Vehicle preparation: repairs or specification changes should only be priced after the vehicle has been assessed.
  • Re-examination: Cyprus SVA rules provide for re-examination after defects are corrected, so ask how a return visit would be charged.
  • Transport: moving an unregistered vehicle from the port, storage facility or workshop may be a separate cost.
  • Customs and tax: these depend on the import route, value and origin and are not the SVA test fee.
  • MOT and registration: roadworthiness testing and final registration are separate stages where applicable.

SVA, MOT, Customs and registration are different

SVA deals with individual vehicle approval. An MOT is a roadworthiness test. Customs deals with import declarations, duty and VAT, while the Road Transport Department handles registration. One payment does not automatically cover all four.

The official vehicle-registration guidance lists documents that can include an SVA certificate, MOT certificate, emissions documentation, foreign registration papers, ownership evidence and insurance, depending on the case. The government’s Business in Cyprus vehicle guidance also lists MOT and registration fees in its relevant context. Those figures should not be presented as the price of an SVA test.

How to request a meaningful quote

Send enough information for the team to identify the likely route. The vehicle identification number is particularly useful because descriptions in sales adverts can be incomplete. Clear scans or photographs of the original documents also help identify gaps before the appointment.

  1. Share the make, model and vehicle identification or chassis number.
  2. State the country from which the vehicle is being imported and its first-registration date.
  3. Confirm whether it is right-hand drive or left-hand drive.
  4. Provide the original Export Certificate, V5C or other foreign registration document, as applicable.
  5. Include proof of ownership and disclose any known modifications or missing equipment.
  6. Ask which services are included and which possible costs remain separate.

Can you know the final cost before inspection?

You can obtain a current quote for the booked service, but nobody should promise the final all-in import cost without seeing the documents and, where relevant, the vehicle. If the inspection identifies a defect, the repair price depends on what is found. Customs treatment also depends on the facts of the transaction and valid evidence of origin.

For the clearest estimate, first confirm whether the vehicle is likely to need SVA by reading which vehicles need SVA in Cyprus. Then review the inspection checklist and the Larnaca SVA procedure before requesting a quote.
