The SVA test is an important step for an eligible imported vehicle, but it should not be confused with the final issue of Cyprus registration or number plates.
What happens next depends on the vehicle’s origin, category, steering position, age and approval history. A used vehicle from a third country may follow a different route from a vehicle transferred from an EU member state.
1. Confirm the SVA result and vehicle details
Check that the vehicle identification details are correct and ask what approval documentation or electronic processing follows the test. Keep every receipt, result and supporting record provided to you.
If the name, VIN, model or other vehicle details appear inconsistent, raise the issue immediately. Corrections are easier to address before a registration application is assembled.
2. Identify the registration route for your vehicle
Do not assume that another owner’s registration checklist applies to your car. Relevant distinctions can include:
- EU or non-EU origin
- New or used status
- Passenger, commercial or another vehicle category
- Right-hand-drive or left-hand-drive configuration
- Commercial import or personal transfer
- Standard, modified, historic or specialist status
The Cyprus Road Transport Department states that an application for a used M1 vehicle from a third country is submitted online by an authorised importer. Confirm who is responsible for your application and what they need from you.
3. Assemble the remaining documents
Depending on the vehicle, the registration file may include:
- A completed vehicle-registration application
- Customs form C72A where applicable
- An invoice, packing list or other proof of ownership
- A valid MOT certificate where required
- A CO2 emissions certificate, such as TOM 119 where applicable
- The original foreign registration certificate
- An approved translation if the foreign certificate is not in Greek or English
- SVA approval, including TOM 139B in applicable cases
- An insurance certificate
- Evidence of any other statutory payment or approval relevant to the vehicle
This is a general overview, not a universal file. Review the official Road Transport Department registration guidance and confirm the current list for your vehicle.
4. Complete any outstanding MOT, emissions or insurance steps
SVA, MOT and emissions documentation serve different purposes. Passing one does not automatically replace the others.
The government’s published registration summary includes an MOT certificate, CO2 certificate and insurance among the documents required in applicable cases. It also lists SVA approval for a left-hand-drive vehicle. See the Business in Cyprus vehicle-registration information.
Confirm the correct order before arranging multiple appointments. This can prevent documents expiring or a vehicle being transported unnecessarily.
5. Submit the registration application
The application must be handled through the route that applies to the vehicle. That may involve an authorised importer and the relevant Road Transport Department office or online system.
Cyprus’s official MOT/SVA portal shows that authorised centres and relevant users can submit inspection results, issue technical-control documentation and apply for vehicle registration. The portal itself does not remove the need to supply the correct evidence. See the Road Transport Department inspection and registration portal.
6. Pay the applicable fees and obtain registration
Registration fees, road tax and other amounts depend on the applicable rules and vehicle details. Confirm current charges with the authority or authorised party processing the application rather than relying on an old online figure.
Only arrange number plates and normal road use after registration, licensing and insurance requirements have been completed. An SVA pass alone is not a substitute for these steps.
Post-SVA registration checklist
- Check the SVA result and vehicle identification details.
- Confirm who will submit the application.
- Identify the correct route for the vehicle’s origin and category.
- Gather original ownership and foreign-registration documents.
- Obtain an approved translation where required.
- Confirm customs clearance and C72A requirements.
- Complete applicable MOT and CO2 certification.
- Arrange the required Cyprus insurance.
- Check current registration fees and road-tax requirements.
- Keep copies of the complete file.
How long does registration take after SVA?
There is no single reliable timeframe for every vehicle. Timing can depend on document completeness, the application route, customs status, additional inspections and the authority’s processing workload.
Avoid promising a collection or sale date until the full registration path is confirmed. If a vehicle is being stored or transported, include possible administrative time in your planning.
Where does the Larnaca SVA centre fit in?
The test centre handles the SVA inspection and related approval stage. It can explain the result and the information associated with that stage, but Customs and the Road Transport Department remain responsible for their respective decisions.
For an overview of the inspection stage, read the SVA test procedure and the main SVA test guide for Cyprus.
